Sheep

This book would not be complete without a sheep project! The beautiful tiny locks of wool are from a Bluefaced Leicester sheep and worked perfectly, creating the ideal effect for this sweet mug rug.

1¼ ounces of Maori Wool was used to create this project. Colors are Sand and Ash plus some natural Bluefaced Leicester locks of wool.

Head

1. Begin by rolling up fiber to sculpt the head. Roll the wool tightly and needle around the shape to secure the ends. Add fiber if needed, until you have created a shape that measures 5 inches around at base (this will be the bottom of the neck), tapering to 3 inches at the top (which will be the nose), and is approximately 5 inches long. Use the needle with a star configuration, poking it straight in and pulling it out at the same angle. As the barbs on the needle push the strands of fiber inward, your shape will become firm and smaller in size. The tighter you are able to roll the fiber, the less needling that will have to be done. Don’t worry if it is not exact. Needling the details will reduce the size of the head, and fiber may always be added to increase the size. Bend it in half and needle at the curve to maintain that shape. Wrap additional fiber around the jaw to differentiate the neck from the head. Tap in the bottom to firm up the base of the neck, creating a solid platform. Needle the head and neck all over until it is fairly dense.
